Question by Halie: How do you care for a Bonsai Ficus?
I just got a bonsai ficus it is about 11 1/2 inches from the bottom of the trunk to the tip of the highest leaf and I have no idea how to take care of it. Can anyone help me figure out how to take care of my plant?

I bought one, too! It is absolutely ADORABLE!!!
The clerk at the store told me to just prune it to my own taste.
What I plan to do, then, is to let it go for a bit, as it gets used to my house (I have had it for about 3 months now, so I am becoming comfortable that it approves of its environment), and then I will watch its growth and keep some of the growth cut off , with the intention of being able to view those beautiful spiralling patterned branches without there being “congestion” hiding that growth, if that makes any sense.
At the store, they had some larger specimens to observe, and that’s how I was able to decide what I would like and would not like.

For me to sit here and explain all the intricate in’s and out’s of the art of Bonsai (and I could), it would take at least two pages and then that would only be the tip of the iceberg! There are many tricks of the trade besides the easy part of watering and fertilizing. My suggestion for you would be to head to a local garden center that carries gardening books such as the ones from “ortho” and purchase one on basic bonsai (bone – sigh) care. Bonsai is a precise art and is learned over many years of gaining experience by either teachings from a bonsai “master” or by reading literature on the subject. There are many great books out there written by “masters” themselves, complete with pictures of some of their greatest work. If you want to do a quick lesson, look up caring for a bonsai tree online, there are many sites with basic care … Hope this answers your question..

About basic bonsai styles
Bonsai, as a Japanese art form, is more regulated than it’s Chinese counterpart, the penjing. Bonsai attempts to achieve the ideal tree, while penjing attempts to reproduce nature. This is why perfect styling exists in bonsai if you obey the ‘rules’, while penjing leave you free to your creation.

8 ounces of water every two days. LOTS OF SUNLIGHT. But you should probably search a more professional website. I killed my poor bonsai in a few short weeks and I still haven’t gotten over it. [sad face]
