Question by KFC Mom: How do you “train” an Dwarf Amur Maple?
I purchased an Amur Maple “Acer Ginnala” and in reading up on it, it can be trained to grow into a tree rather than a shrub. I bout it thinking it was a tree, however there are numerous branches at the base. I need to know how to prune it so that it will grow more tree like than shrub/bush like

Best answer:

Answer by Gia E
Just keep taking branches from the bottom. As the tree puts more growth on top, you can take away some of the branches on the bottom. I wouldnt remove any branches unless you have new growth on the top. As it grows you should be able to keep removing lower branches until you have a tree.

If it has more than one trunk, pick the largest, healthiest, straightest trunk and cut the others off.

Question by Matt: Please help me identify this type of leaf (a type of picture included)?
I have no idea what kind of leaf this is but it look like a mountain maple (Acer spicatum) but the mountain is a little more symetrical in the veins that it has than the leaf that i have. Also, it is smooth where as the mountain maple is a bit fuzzy. Also, the edges of the leaf are smoother than on this mountain maple.

This picture below looks like it so hopfully someone can please help me identify this :)

Probably another maple, like the sugar maple. It is smooth to the touch, no serration along the sides. But it will have deeper indentations clearly showing five points.

Question by ale86tv: What is the most popular sugar maple cultivar for making syrup?
Hi,

I’m doing a research for school about maples.
I know that sugar maple (Acer Saccharum) is used for making syrup, but what is the most popular cultivar? I thought it should be a cultivar common in Vermont.

There are different ones like Green Mountain, Unity, Commemoration, Bonfire.. but I don’t which one is most common for syrup.

Thanks!

I realize you’re asking if there’s one cultivar used more for the manufacture of syrup than others, but after about 20 minutes of research, this is the best I could do. Sorry.

If you live in Vermont, find some syrup distributors and ask them. I Googled “Vermont maple syrup farms” and got bunches of hits; if you check their websites, they may have a “Contact us” or FAQ page.

This is as much as I could narrow it down:
Red Maple: Red Maple is also known as Soft Maple and grows up to a height of 60 feet and is native to North America. It is a deciduous tree and is popular for its crimson red leaves in autumn. All the parts of tree, leaves, flowers, twigs and seeds have different shades of red. The commercial use of Red Maple is in the production of maple syrup. Some of the cultivars of Red Maple are:

* ‘Autumn Spire’
* ‘October Glory’
* ‘Red Sunset’
* ‘Armstrong’

Sugar Maple: This type of Maple tree is native to North America and is a deciduous tree with a maximum height of 120 feet. The leaves are green in color that turn to elegant yellow shades in fall. The tree grows well in shade and is also drought tolerant. The Sugar Maple is considered to be the best source of maple syrup. The wood of Sugar Maple is used for furniture and flooring. Some of the Sugar Maple cultivars are given below,

* ‘Fall Fiesta’
* ‘Sweet Shadow’
* ‘Green Mountain’
* ‘Apollo’

Question by deece272: Could I prune dead tips off Japanese Maple (Acer Palmatum) now?
This Acer was damaged by frost and is only now trying to grow some shoots. Should I leave taking the frost damage off until later or could I take off the damaged ends now?

Best answer:

Answer by Quite New Here
As far as I remember, the maples look after itself, They lose what they do not need and does not require any intervention from you. at all. Give it some fertilizer in their water now and another feeding while it is still spring.
My maples always look scraggly and damaged after every winter but after a few weeks grow to be just as gorgeous as ever.
