Question by Chris: Eastern Redbud – Seedlings messy?
Hi,
I was thinking about getting an Eastern Redbud – Cercis Canadensis. Can anyone tell me:
1) Are the pods that fall of the tree are messy or invasive? Are these seeds that plant themselves?
2) How are the roots of these trees? Are the roots good around sidewalk?

Thanks for any help, Chris

It’s a small ornamental tree. The roots are not an issue. Yes, it self-seeds. But the young trees are easy to pull out before they become a problem if you watch for them.

It’s one of my favorite trees, and I have not been without one at any of my homes. Currently, I have a big “regular” one in my front yard (“big” is a relative term – it’s about 15 feet, and full), and a Forest Pansy in my back yard…looks and grows the same, but the leaves have a dark purple cast to them.
