Question by .^.: If lop a conifer tree (specifically “Hemlock” Tsuga Canadensis) nearly in half …how will it grow after that?
the main trunk or stem was about 1 inch and a half…and have these in a hedge..and want them to grow together..and heard that this would help them fill out widely and grow together..but was concerned how they will now grow UP? will the main trunk ,,even though lopped..continue to grow straight up or how will grow and will they grow back again to height they had before i cut them? after how long probably? (if 4 years old)

btw, these particular ones are Canadian Hemlocks.. and have them planted 10 feet apart to grow into a hedge.

any help appreciated.

thanks for your answers!
NOT SURE…IF IT WOULD BE BETTER TO CUT THE MAIN TRUNK TO 3.5 FT OR 4 FT..IF WISHING THE HEDGE TO BE A FULL 6 FT. HEDGE..BUT THOUGHT IT WOULD FILL OUT ON TOP IN LESS STRONG LIMBS..THAT WILL BE EASIER TO TRIM THE TOP OFF OF TO MAINTAIN THE HEIGHT NOT GOING OVER 6 FT..BUT NOT SURE WHAT WILL LOOK LIKE. HOW WILL LOOK COMPARED TO IF I JUST KEPT IT LOPPED AT 6FT AND WHY?

For most plants, You keep the top trimmed, it will bush out at the bottom.
You might need to plant closer than 10 feet apart tho.
