Question by smokinjoe2122: Repot a Ficus Bonsai in winter?
I live in wisconsin and we are in mid going on to late winter. Would I be ok re-potting my ficus (ginseng) bonsai? The roots are starting to pop out of the soil and it’s getting harder to tell how moist the soil is. A few of the leaves on the lower part of the tree are turning yellow and dying, which didn’t happen in summer.
I have never re-potted a tree before, so if anyone wants to help me with the procedure, I would appreciate it. Right now it’s in a deeper pot (3″ deep) and the new bonsai pot is 2.5″. How much of the roots should I trim? I also heard I should leave it out of direct sunlight for a while afterwards.

Question by Christina: Best tree for a first time Bonzai?
I would like to try my hand at training a bonzai and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for my first tree. I live in an apartment so it would have to be something I could have indoors most of the year (I do have a small small small balcony). I am not a fan of ficus so that is out. Thanks!

Target sells a beginner kit, it includes the pot, soil and seeds.
This is if you want to start from the beginning. If not be sure to pick up and indoor bonsai because most love the sun. You can get them at Home Depot, Lowes or Pike Nurseries. Don’t trim them too much, they will go into shock. The biggest mistake most people make is over watering. It’s best to have a clay pot inside a dish so you just add the water to the dish and allow the plants roots to pull the water when it needs it.

Question by Joseph: Do you know bonsai nurseries run by Japanese in Southern California?
Japan is famous for its art of bonsai. Raising bonsai has become my hobby since 11/2006. As I learn more about the art of bonsai, I realize that bonsai trees your see at Walmart or HomeDepot hardly qualify as bonsai by any standard.
If you happen to know any bonsai nursery run by Japanese, please let me know the name of the nursery and the address. Thank you in advance.

I don’t know of any. My father was a gardener and some of the gardeners did it as a hobby. Making a living doing this art is hard and long term as you are finding out.
There are some groups in Southern California, one is Shohim Bonsai Society and they meet monthly. I am sure someone can help you there.

Found another one, Descanso Bonsai society and they have links to other clubs.

This is the most comprehensive site.
This is one nursery in LA yamaguchi’s and below is a link to the listing of them in or near LA

Good luck and enjoy.
