Question by rb_m3: How do I start my Japanese Maple bonsai?
I have 3 trees growing outdoors from seeds, 2 yrs old, 8-12″ high. I cut 1/2 the roots in situ, waited 2 weeks, cut the rest of the roots in situ. My plan is to wait 2 more weeks for them to recover, then dig them up, pot them, and bring them indoors. On 2 of the trees, all the leaves are dying. Have I killed them? Will my plan still work?

I don’t understand “situ.” However, you don’t want to bring them indoors……..EVER! They are outdoor trees and must go through the winter months (keep them above 30ºF so they don’t freeze).
You may want to look at the Bonsai Care page on my site:
http://www.american-bonsai.com to get an idea about how to trim the roots and plant them in pots.

Probably the best article I have read on the subject is by my friend and fellow Bonsai Boon student, Chris Johnston. This is the way I have been repotting my trees for the past several years. You will be amazed at the health and vigor of your trees if they are repotted at the proper time, into well draining soil, with proper technique and after care.
